Historic Centre of Macao

The special administrative region (SAR) Macao was under Portuguese administration from 1553 until 1999, when it came under Chinese sovereignty. The winding alleyways and historic Chinese and Portuguese buildings are constant reminders of the first Europeans to settle in the Far East. This UNESCO World Heritage Site also boasts a fortress and the oldest lighthouse in China. Because of its vibrant international trade, Macao bears testimony to one of the earliest and harmonious coming together of cultures from East and West.
