Mount Wutai

Wutai Shan 五台山 or Qingliang Shan 清凉山 is a mountain range in China's North Eastern Province Shanxi and if for Buddhism of great importance. Apart from the mountains Emei Shan, Putuo Shan and Jiuhua Shan, Wutaishan is the most important of the four holy mountains of Buddhism and has been added in June 2009 to the UNESCO world heritage sites. The mountain range is over 100 km long and named after the five peaks around the village of Taihuai 台怀. With 3058 m, the Northern peak or Beitaiding, is not only the highest summit of the range, but also the highest mountain in all of Northeastern China. With average temperatures of only 9°C in summer, Wutaishan is also called "cool mountain" or Qingliang Shan. In winter temperatures can drop as low as -45°C  during the day..

There are a lot of temples and monasteries nestled around Taihuai and the most famous are Foguang-Temple (Wutai) and Nanchan-Temple, which counts with its famous big hall among the oldest still existing buildings in China. Many Buddhists believe that Wutaishan is the residence of Bodhisattva Manjushri
