Jokhang Monastery is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Tibet, located on Barkhor Square in central Lhasa. It was built during the reign of King Songsten Gampo (605-650) to celebrate his marriage with Chinese Tang Dynasty princess Wencheng and covers an area of approximately 25'000 square meters.

It was listed on the UNESCO List of World Heritages Sites in 2000 as a part of the "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace.
