Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System

Located about 60 km northwest of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, the Dujiangyan Water Irrigation System was built in the 3rd Century B.C. by genius engineer Li Bing. The mighty Minjiang River regularly flooded the plains of Chengdu thus Li Bing irrigated the river into different canals. In addition Li Bing invented an annual maintenance plan for the project, which is still ongoing. The project has been constantly developed during the centuries and still serves well its purpose.

In the 2nd Century A.D., the Minjiang River and the project were honored by the erection of a temple in Lidui Park. On the opposite mountain slope, in the Yuelei Shan Park, some more temples invite for a great view on the irrigation system and some relaxing moments in the lush area.

In 2000 Dujiangyan has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Mount Qingcheng - the birthplace of Taoism.
