Nikolaus Ellrodt was born in West Berlin, Germany. He received a degree in hotel administration from the "Fachschule für Hotel und Gaststätten" in Berlin. He held several managerial positions in 5 star hotels of international chains like Hilton, InterContinental and Le Meridien and independent luxury hotels in Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Mexico and China. Based in Shanghai, he developed the Asian market for the hotel online booking platform HRS in his function as General Manager for Asia between 2002 and 2007. In 2007 he relocated to Beijing to open Hotel G, a luxury Boutique hotel located in the fashionable entertainment district of Sanlitun.

While his professional training is hotel management, he was confronted since childhood with contemporary art, by his mother, who is an art lover and collector. He has been living in China since 1995, where he started to collect Chinese contemporary art and developed a keen interest in that field. His decision to work in the art field was fuelled by his friends and their friends, who used his expertise in Chinese contemporary art to build own collections. After an international collector decided to purchase all his Chinese art work through him, he decided that he could transform his love for the Chinese art into his profession. In 2008 he started to work as an independent art dealer and art consultant, opening a gallery in Beijing’s Art District 798 in the year 2009. Although representing established artists too, his main interest is in young, very talented emerging artists. He has an extensive network in the China art scene and is well connected with artists, curators and gallery owners.
