Ulaanbaator was founded in 1639 and is now Mongolia's largest city, its capital and the cultural, industrial and financial heart with a population of just over 1 million. It is an independent municipality and therefore not part of any province, situated in the north central part of the country at an elevation of about 1'310 m in a valley on the Tuul River.
