In 1999, IUCN estimated that there were probably fewer than 2,500 mature individuals surviving.
Distribution
Temperate forests in the Himalayan foothills from western Nepal through northern Myanmar (Burma) and in the mountains of southwestern China (Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet/Xizang provinces) at altitudes between 2,200-4,800 meters. Red pandas rest and shelter in trees and rock crevasses.
