There are approximately 1,600 giant pandas surviving in the wild, and approximately 190 in captivity.

Distribution

Fossil evidence indicates that giant pandas were widely distributed throughout eastern China, as far north as Beijing, and as far west as Myanmar (Burma). Today, 85% of the wild giant panda population is distributed in the mountainous regions of Sichuan Province, the remaining populations occur in Gansu and Shanxi Provinces.
